IBM’s The Smarter City

I came across IBM’s TheSmarterCIty presentation, which does a great job of explaining how networked computing can help transit in cities. it’s a really similar concept to the network_LA and ridefinder projects I’ve worked on, but is about a million times better at explaining the idea… but what’s particularly interesting is that it advocates a centralized server because similar agencies will be running transit, emergency services and road maintenance. that’s a pretty stark difference between a european city (TheSmarterCity is based on stockholm) and an american one, where there can be as many as 10 agencies in transit in one city alone. but it’s a great pitch for a company that manufactures servers.
